Big hitting from Mathew Hayden and Mahendra Singh Dhoni propelled Chennai to a 12 run win in a rain affected match. Set an imposing 186 for victory in 18 overs, Punjab batsmen were in for a fight. Katich led the charge with an explosive 50 of 25 balls and Yuvraj scored 58, but the target proved too much.
Earlier in the day, Chennai made a terrible start. Badrinath added to the long list of players out first ball of the innings. But from there on in they did not look back, Hayden, Raina and Dhoni took the Punjab bowlers to task. Hayden was finally out after scoring 89 of 58 balls, an innings which included 6 sixes and 8 fours.
Chennai are now in a comfortable position to take a semi final spot. Punjab on the other hand have a lot to do if they are to make it.
