Kings XI Punjab took on Kolkatta Knight Riders in match 6 of DLF IPL 2. With both the teams loosing their first outing, were looking kick start their journey in IPL 2. McCullum won the toss and elected to field this time. When the scoreboard read 9/0 Karan Goel attempted a rash shot and was out with a duck against his name. In came Irfan Pathan who was promoted to number three to unsettle the bowlers rhythm and he proved his capabilities with a bat. Irfan played brilliantly scoring 32 off just 17 balls which included 5 fours and one massive six. With the regular bowlers unable to tie Irfan up, McCullum handed over the ball to "Dada". Ganguly made a comeback of sorts taking the prized wicket of Irfan, thanks to a brilliant catch from Murali Karthik at deep midwicket. In the same over Ravi Bopara edged a fractionally short and wide ball to McCullum and boy Dada was on fire. Kumara Sangakara and Yuvaraj Singh consolidated the innings by concentrating more on the ones and twos and cutting down on the risk quotient. When the partnership was looking dangerous and both batsman looking to change gears, Kumara Sangakara was run out due to a brilliant effort in the field from Aakash Chopra. Yuvaraj and Jayawardane helped Punjab reach a score of 158, with Jayawardane scoring 19 off the last over of Dinda and remained unbeaten on 31 of just 19 balls.
Required to chase a moderate total of 159, Kolkatta started off with a bang with both McCullum and Chris Gayle sending the ball consistently over the boundary. The Windies captain in particular displayed his hard hitting capabilities scoring 44 at a strike rate of 169, sending four balls out of the park.McCullum was out in the sixth over after adding 57 runs for the first wicket along with Gayle. Sangakara dropped Gayle the very next over and Kolkatta finished off without further losses, as heavy rains handed them a victory of 11 runs by Duckworth and Lewis method. Chris Gayle was declared man of the match and after sometime Shahrukh Khan had a reason to smile!
